Austria Sees Record-Lowest Monthly Asylum Applications in a Decade for July

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded a total of 244 new first-time asylum requests, marking the lowest monthly figure in a decade. This number represents approximately a 65% decrease from 697 applications in July 2025, as reported by Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including all asylum submissions—both initial and subsequent—the total for July reached 840. These latest figures highlight a steep decline in asylum applications across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum requests, compared to 10,442 during the same period in 2025, indicating an approximate 45% reduction from the previous year. The overall numbers cover various types of applications, but the July figure of 244 pertains specifically to first-time claims. The Austrian authorities release monthly asylum data that distinguish these categories, providing a more detailed understanding of new and repeated claims.

Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications in July, making them the largest nationality group for that month. The ministry noted that most Syrian submissions involved children born in Austria rather than recently arrived applicants. Austria has also continued to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, a significant drop from 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in returns and border apprehensions observed

More departures than first-time asylum requests occurred during the first seven months of 2026. By the end of July, 8,856 people had exited Austria through voluntary departures or enforced removals, including 4,615 enforced removals and 4,241 voluntary exits. Additionally, authorities completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for specific asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions along Austria’s eastern border in Burgenland have also decreased compared to previous years. From January through mid-August 2026, officials recorded 339 apprehensions, a notable decline from nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry linked these figures to enforcement actions and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Police in Austria have also taken part in Operation Fox, a joint initiative targeting migrant smuggling and illegal border crossings.

Asylum application numbers keep declining through 2026

The July data continues a trend of reduced asylum activity seen during the first half of 2026. During that six-month span, Austria reported approximately 5,000 asylum requests, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented these figures as part of the government’s latest migration statistics. Austria has also sustained voluntary repatriation efforts for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July according to official figures.

The current statistics clearly indicate a year-on-year decline in both first-time asylum applications and total filings. The 244 original claims in July represent the lowest in a decade, as highlighted in government reports, while the overall monthly number of 840 remains consistent with this downward trend. The total of 5,743 applications from January through July is significantly below the 2025 figures. Austrian authorities continue to categorize these monthly data within their ongoing asylum and migration reporting, providing separate details on applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
