BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has allocated emergency humanitarian funding amounting to €2.3 million to address cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This support aims to assist Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad by funding treatment initiatives, surveillance activities, access to clean water, and sanitation measures, according to officials. The announcement coincides with a rise in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a significant spike primarily in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will benefit from €1.5 million of the emergency funds, representing the largest portion of the aid package. This money will expand intervention teams and supply cholera kits and other vital materials. It will also be used to enhance treatment at public water points and households. Part of the funding will bolster disease surveillance efforts in remote areas, while the program additionally emphasizes case management, risk communication, and community engagement as health teams work to prevent further spread in affected communities.

According to the most recent World Health Organization data, 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 countries in Africa through June 28, with 1,528 fatalities documented. Nigeria reported 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during this period. In June alone, the country saw 19,887 new cases and 97 fatalities. WHO highlighted that Borno State accounted for over 95% of Nigeria’s cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected regions.

Funding Focuses on Treatment, Water, and Surveillance Efforts

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000, which will be used for case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The aid will also enhance disease surveillance, case detection, and community engagement, including support for safe and dignified burials during the outbreak response. WHO reported 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission stated that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks affecting these four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to strengthen outbreak containment and patient care in affected communities. The funding will cover additional humanitarian staff, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO data show 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon through June 28. Chad is allocated €200,000 for water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives, including community surveillance and case management. During the same period, Chad reported 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s Outbreak Surge Propels Regional Increase in Cases

WHO reported that in June, the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries, marking a 95% increase compared to May. The region also experienced 284 deaths related to cholera that month. Nigeria had the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO linked Nigeria’s rise to the spike in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have elevated the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can lead to severe dehydration requiring immediate treatment. The EU funds aim to support strategies that disrupt transmission and improve healthcare access in affected areas. The total aid package for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, focusing on expanding treatment capacity, enhancing surveillance, supporting vaccination efforts where applicable, ensuring safer water supplies, improving sanitation, and providing direct community support amid the ongoing outbreak response.
