MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to official daily mortality surveillance data published by the Carlos III Health Institute, almost 2,150 individuals in Spain succumbed to heat-related causes in August. The MoMo monitoring system recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme heat throughout the month, making it the second-highest August figure since the start of national data collection in 2015. As persistent European heatwaves push seasonal mortality to historic levels across the Iberian Peninsula, Spain’s August death toll approaches 2,150.

Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

The only August figure higher was the record 2,184 heat-related fatalities in August 2025. Public health figures indicate that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 deaths occurred due to thermal stress. This marks the highest summer mortality record ever documented by the national public health institute since their tracking system’s inception, surpassing the previous peak of 4,652 deaths registered during summer 2022. While Spain continues to record nearly 2,150 heat-related deaths in August, health authorities are assessing the strain on regional emergency response services caused by these extreme conditions.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health shows that seniors faced the greatest risk during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were over 65 years old, including 1,285 individuals over 85. Gender breakdowns reveal that 1,283 of the deceased were women and 866 men. Medical experts have highlighted that prolonged high temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, especially among vulnerable groups.

Regionally, the northeastern area of Catalonia reported the highest concentration of heat-related fatalities, with 1,164 deaths in August. The Valencia region registered the second-highest number at 227, followed by Andalusia with 138 heat-attributed deaths. Local public health authorities in these regions have expanded community outreach efforts and increased access to cooling centers, though persistent high nighttime temperatures continue to hinder residents’ recovery.

The State Meteorological Agency AEMET’s latest weather updates indicate that heat risks remain elevated into early autumn. Forecasters confirmed that an unusually hot September episode affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly exceeding typical seasonal averages. Climatologists note that Western Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and prolonged summer heat episodes, aligning with broader climate warming trends.

Over One Thousand Heat-Related Deaths Reported in Catalonia During August

Federal health authorities continue collaborating with local governments to strengthen preventative measures and track high-risk patient registries. Emergency medical services have adjusted their protocols to respond swiftly to heat-related health issues. National public health advisories are still active, urging citizens to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated amid ongoing unseasonable atmospheric conditions.

Once September’s final surveillance data is available, government agencies plan to compile comprehensive assessments of summer mortality. Experts emphasize that long-term infrastructure modifications, such as urban planning improvements and better insulation in public housing, are essential to shield vulnerable populations from recurring extreme heat events. The final mortality figures will be published through official ministry portals to guide future health policy decisions.
