LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain is enhancing its defenses against sophisticated AI threats after trials uncovered over 1,300 cyber weaknesses. These vulnerabilities were found across hundreds of government software repositories. The UK government announced that its initiative will leverage frontier AI tools to improve cyber defenses and pinpoint flaws within vital digital systems. Additionally, officials are developing strategies to respond to serious incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort is part of a broader initiative to boost national resilience as more advanced AI models become available for public use.

During two government pilots, a total of 1,352 vulnerabilities were identified and remedied across 548 code repositories within 18 departments. The tests aimed to evaluate how cutting-edge AI could assist in finding software flaws and identifying potential cyber threats. Plans are now underway to expand the frontier AI hardening program across government entities. The focus will be on addressing vulnerabilities within systems deemed to carry the highest risk. The initiative also seeks to enhance overall government capability in employing AI for cyber defense while ensuring proper oversight of the technology.
The Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan stated that Britain’s AI Security Institute is assessing advanced models and testing the robustness of their safeguards. The institute, which employs more than 100 technical specialists, is currently evaluating systems such as Gemini 4 Argon and other sophisticated AI platforms. The government emphasizes that independent testing remains essential because public authorities cannot rely solely on AI developers to evaluate the risks posed by increasingly capable models.
Expansion of AI incident preparedness
The National Cyber Security Centre collaborates with government agencies and the AI Security Institute to establish protocols for major incidents involving agentic AI systems. These systems are capable of executing complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The upcoming framework will assist authorities in incident detection, risk containment, and support for affected individuals. Officials are also exploring how existing cyber response structures can manage failures involving autonomous AI and advanced technologies across key public services.
Further, the government is contemplating amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill currently progressing through Parliament. Proposed measures could include enhanced handling of AI-related cyber risks, major incidents, near misses, and events where control is lost. Existing proposals mandate that regulated operators and digital service providers report significant cyber incidents, with initial notifications required within 24 hours and comprehensive reports within 72 hours. These security measures extend to critical services such as hospitals, energy grids, and drinking-water infrastructure.
Britain advances AI safety protocols
Narayan highlighted that the UK must integrate stronger cyber defenses with independent testing and enhance domestic technical expertise. He also indicated that new legislation might be necessary where current safeguards fall short of managing emerging risks. The government has initiated development efforts for AI verification tools and intends to release further information in the upcoming months. These tools are designed to verify that advanced AI systems operate as intended and that safety controls remain effective under demanding conditions.
These initiatives are part of a broader government program analyzing the national security and public service implications of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is reviewing issues related to economic growth, public services, the workforce, and security. Additionally, Britain has identified AI as a key policy issue for its 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity measures focus on testing advanced models, fixing software vulnerabilities, and preparing government systems for serious incidents involving AI technology.
