HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders on Friday for around 1,800 residents in western Germany as a rapidly spreading wildfire moved closer to homes. Official emergency statements confirmed that municipal civil defense agencies ordered the immediate evacuation of the entire Gey district within Hürtgenwald municipality, situated in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Belgian border. The emergency response system was activated early in the morning after the fire lines advanced within 300 meters of the community boundary.

The fire started locally on Thursday afternoon, burning across about 25 hectares of dense woodland, roughly the size of 35 football fields. Elevated seasonal temperatures, dry winds, and tinder-dry vegetation contributed to the rapid expansion of the blaze, which grew overnight to over 300 hectares of forest. Emergency management officials issued the highest threat level through the national NINA emergency warning mobile app, advising residents to gather essential documents and medications before evacuating.

A main reception and assistance center was set up at an elementary school in the nearby district of Straß to help displaced families. Regional transportation authorities kept roads closed across Hürtgenwald to prioritize emergency supply convoys and heavy machinery. Public safety personnel confirmed that evacuation procedures were well-organized, with rescue teams conducting door-to-door checks across all neighborhoods to ensure full compliance.

Firefighting efforts encountered significant hurdles due to unexploded World War II ammunition scattered in the nearby woodland, remnants of historical military activity left uncleared. Emergency teams reported hearing occasional explosions from buried ordnance as the heat from the fire approached a former military munitions depot near Düren. To reduce risks for ground crews and establish firebreaks in dense terrain, the Bundeswehr dispatched armored vehicles to clear blocked access routes.

Aerial firefighting units operated alongside ground crews from regional fire services. Specialized helicopters, equipped with water buckets, performed continuous drops of water sourced from local reservoirs onto hot spots around the perimeter. Over 300 emergency responders from municipal, state, and civil protection agencies, supported by Technisches Hilfswerk specialists, established physical barriers to prevent the fire from reaching residential areas.

Officials from the state government expressed worry over the proximity of active flames to vital infrastructure and residential zones. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur emphasized the operational difficulties faced by responders and confirmed that emergency funds from the state had been allocated to support municipal containment efforts. Regional authorities continue collaborating with local officials under Bezirksregierung Köln to ensure continuous command at the scene.

Protection teams remain stationed around Gey to shield homes and prevent rekindling as tactical operations persist. Environmental agencies monitor shifting winds and humidity levels to evaluate risks to neighboring municipalities. As the wildfire forces the evacuation of 1,800 residents in western Germany, local authorities confirm that emergency services will stay fully operational until conditions are fully stabilized.
